First day of Anxious Borders Workshop Project

First day of Anxious Borders Workshop Project

The first day of the workshop took place at the Mersin University Faculty of Fine Arts. After a brief introduction by Tayfun Akdemir of Carbon Collective and Duygu Kaban of Spacedigger, the first three experts gave talk about how they view the Anxious Borders theme.

Dr. Tolga Ünlü gave a detailed history of the development and spread of the Akdeniz Municipality, and great Mersin. He discussed the typologies of the built environment during each of the stages of the region's growth.

Ahmet Karabulak shared his experience creating and documenting art in and about the city. He gave examples of urban artistic interventions and outlined the ways that artists have used the city as both an inspiration and a canvas.

Şeref Erol discussed the growth of the city as a place of conflict, anxiety, and artistic expression from early civilisation until today. Touching on philosophy and history, he outlined the perspectives from which the city itself can be seen as an artistic image.

Countdown to the Workshop

Countdown to the Workshop

For the last several days, Spacedigger and Carbon Collective have been organizing the final details of the Anxious Borders workshop. Today, members rolled up their sleaves to clean the exhibition space that will house the art peices produced during the coming week.

The exhibition space, one of the most beautiful and iconic buildings in Çamlıbel, was once a large family home but later was used as a nursery school. For several years it has been vacant, and the Anxious Borders team put some muscle into making it ready for visitors again.

Field research in Karaduvar

Carbon Collective and Spacedigger visit parts of the Akdeniz municipality while planning how to execute the Anxious Borders workshop in December, 2015. Their research took them to the nieghborhood of Karaduvar, an area separated from the rest of the city center by the port, the free trade zone, and several hectares of warehouses.

Karaduvar was once an ancient roman town, and today it seems more like an isolated fishing village than a part of the center of a city of almost a million people.
